It is not legal to sell raw milk for human consumption in the State of Colorado. However, Colorado Revised Statutes 25-5-.5-117 allows for milk distribution through a consumer/farmer contract known as a herd share agreement.
Harvest Acres, LLC offers shares in its dairy goat herd. The price per share is $50. Shareholders may buy as many shares as they like, each share being a one-time purchase. A monthly boarding fee of $40 per share provides for us to house, feed, milk and care for your portion of the herd. Each share will entitle the shareholder to approximately one gallon of milk per week. Partial shares are available. Boarding fees are due monthly, regardless of the quantity of milk in your share.
Please keep in mind that goats are seasonal breeders and naturally experience a drop in the amount of milk they produce during breeding season. Our herd is composed of sixteen goats, divided into two breeding groups. Each group is bred every other year, allowing us to milk one group while the others are given a rest in preparation for gestation through weaning. We are hopeful that this practice will allow us to supply a consistent quantity of milk to our shareholders year round, as well as improve the overall health of our does and their offspring.
Please contact us if you are interested in purchasing a share in our herd. We invite all potential shareholders to visit, meet the goats, and observe our feeding, milk handling and care practices. This also provides time to ask questions and complete the necessary contracts. You can also help with chores and milking if you desire.
